In Europe, finding a button was once considered a symbol of good luck. In Germany, touching a button is still a way of wishing someone well, and in Victorian England collecting buttons from a bride's dress was thought to hasten a girl's marriage. Yet if even a single button comes undone, an entire shirt turns uncomfortable. This small, round object is the silent guardian of our clothing — and it carries 5,000 years of civilization, royal prestige, and innovation.
Surprisingly, buttons were not invented to fasten clothing. Around 5,000 years ago, during the Indus Valley Civilization at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, the earliest known buttons were carved from seashells — beautiful and intricately designed, yet purely decorative. Clothing was secured with cords, belts, knots, or metal fibulae, the predecessors of the modern safety pin.
During the 13th century, German craftsmen developed the buttonhole — a reinforced slit through which a button could securely pass. For the first time, clothing could be tailored to fit the human body, ushering in a new era of European fashion and moving the humble button to the centre of clothing design.
The word “button” derives from the Old French boton, meaning “flower bud”; the Bengali বোতাম evolved along the same path. In medieval Europe a single button could be worth several months' wages, and nobles commissioned buttons of gold, silver, ivory, and gemstones. King Francis I of France wore a royal garment adorned with nearly 13,000 gold buttons.
The Industrial Revolution transformed button manufacturing. Steam-powered factories began mass-producing buttons from metal, glass, wood, horn, bone, and eventually synthetic materials. What was once a luxury became part of everyday life.
The 20th century brought celluloid, Bakelite, polyester, and nylon. Today plastic — especially polyester — dominates the global market because it is durable, economical, lightweight, and versatile. Industry estimates suggest hundreds of billions of buttons are manufactured worldwide every year.
Buttons gained popularity in Bengal during the Mughal era, when gold and silver buttons decorated sherwanis, angrakhas, achkans, and other royal garments as symbols of prestige and status.
In most countries, men's shirts have buttons on the right, while women's garments have buttons on the left. Historians generally believe this tradition originated among European nobility.
A button remains securely fastened inside a buttonhole because of the combined effects of fabric tension and friction — until sufficient force is applied.
Button technology continues to evolve. Magnetic buttons, invisible fastening systems, 3D-printed designs, and eco-friendly alternatives made from bioplastics, coconut shells, bamboo, and plant fibres are becoming increasingly common.
A button is far more than a simple piece of plastic. It carries the legacy of Indus Valley artisans, the grandeur of medieval royalty, the ingenuity of the Industrial Revolution, and today's commitment to sustainability. Few everyday objects have witnessed such an extraordinary journey through human history.
একসময় ইউরোপে মাটিতে পড়ে থাকা একটি বোতাম কুড়িয়ে পাওয়া সৌভাগ্যের প্রতীক হিসেবে বিবেচিত হতো। জার্মানিতে আজও কাউকে শুভকামনা জানাতে জামার বোতাম স্পর্শ করা হয়। লোকবিশ্বাস যা-ই হোক, একটি বোতাম খুলে গেলে পুরো পোশাকই অস্বস্তিকর হয়ে ওঠে। ছোট্ট গোলাকার এই বস্তুটি যেন পোশাকের নীরব প্রহরী — যার সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে আছে মানবসভ্যতার পাঁচ হাজার বছরের ইতিহাস।
অদ্ভুত হলেও সত্য, বোতাম প্রথমে পোশাক আটকানোর জন্য তৈরি হয়নি; এর জন্ম হয়েছিল অলংকার হিসেবে। প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার বছর আগে সিন্ধু সভ্যতার মহেঞোদারো ও হরপ্পায় ঝিনুক দিয়ে তৈরি সূক্ষ্ম নকশার বোতাম পাওয়া যায়। তখন পোশাক বাঁধা হতো দড়ি, বেল্ট, গিঁট কিংবা ধাতব ফিবুলা দিয়ে।
১৩শ শতকে জার্মান কারিগররা প্রথম তৈরি করেন বোতামহোল — কাপড়ে বিশেষ ছিদ্র, যার মধ্য দিয়ে বোতাম নিরাপদে আটকানো যায়। এর ফলে পোশাক শরীরের সঙ্গে নিখুঁতভাবে মানিয়ে নেওয়া সম্ভব হয় এবং ইউরোপে শুরু হয় ফ্যাশনের নতুন যুগ।
‘বোতাম’ শব্দটির উৎস প্রাচীন ফরাসি শব্দ ‘বোটন’। মধ্যযুগীয় ইউরোপে একটি বোতামের মূল্য কখনো কখনো একজন সাধারণ মানুষের কয়েক মাসের আয়ের সমান ছিল। রাজা-বাদশারা সোনা, রুপা ও মণিমুক্তার বোতাম ব্যবহার করতেন।
১৮শ ও ১৯শ শতকের শিল্পবিপ্লব বোতামকে অভিজাত সমাজের গণ্ডি থেকে বের করে সাধারণ মানুষের নাগালে নিয়ে আসে। কারখানায় ধাতু, কাচ, কাঠ ও হাড় থেকে ব্যাপক হারে বোতাম তৈরি শুরু হয়।
বিশ শতকে সেলুলয়েড, বেকেলাইট, পলিয়েস্টার ও নাইলনের আবিষ্কার বোতাম শিল্পে নতুন বিপ্লব আনে। বর্তমানে সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয় পলিয়েস্টারসহ নানা প্লাস্টিকের বোতাম।
বাংলায় বোতামের জনপ্রিয়তা বৃদ্ধি পায় মোগল আমলে, যখন সোনা-রুপার বোতাম শোভা পেত শেরওয়ানি, আঙরাখা ও আচকানে — মর্যাদার প্রতীক হিসেবে।
সাধারণত পুরুষদের শার্টে বোতাম থাকে ডান পাশে, আর নারীদের পোশাকে বাঁ পাশে। ঐতিহাসিকদের মতে এই রীতির উৎপত্তি ইউরোপীয় অভিজাত সমাজে।
বোতামহোলের ভেতরে বোতাম আটকে থাকে মূলত কাপড়ের টান এবং ঘর্ষণ বলের কারণে — যতক্ষণ না যথেষ্ট বল প্রয়োগ করা হয়।
বর্তমানে বাজারে আসছে চুম্বকযুক্ত বোতাম, থ্রিডি-প্রিন্টেড বোতাম এবং কোকোনাট, বাঁশ ও উদ্ভিজ্জ আঁশের মতো পরিবেশবান্ধব উপাদানে তৈরি বোতাম।
বোতাম কেবল পোশাকের অংশ নয়; এটি মানুষের উদ্ভাবনী শক্তি, রুচি, অর্থনীতি, প্রযুক্তি ও সংস্কৃতির পাঁচ হাজার বছরের এক নীরব সাক্ষী।
